My Christmas presents

Sadly, even after threats of suicide, shameless pleading, hours of sulking etc., Anja still wasn't persuaded to buy me Barth's entire Church Dogmatics (she muttered something about moving out if I had the nerve), but I was glad to have been given instead:

  1. My Struggle for Freedom (Continuum, 2004), by Hans Küng.
  2. The Drama of Doctrine: A Canonical-linguistic Approach to Christian Theology (Westminster John Knox Press, 2004), by Kevin J. Vanhoozer
  3. The new Hurtado book: How On Earth Did Jesus Become a God?: Historical Questions About Earliest Devotion to Jesus (Cambridge: Eerdmans, 2005)

  4. And finally, and most profound and thought-provoking of all, the entire 4 series DVD set of Blackadder – British comedy at its very best. If you haven't seen these, you really are missing something.

I Love Blackadder! Awesome stuff. My favorite is the medieval incarnation- though the 18th century one is funny too. Cool present!

Hi chaps,

I know, Blackadder really is a great present. It probably isn't an overestimation to say that it played a part in my education and social development! We would memorise the dialogues and quote them to each other at school!

That reminds me ...

*gets up reaches for Stephen Tomkins' A Short History of Christianity*

Yes, amazing! This is what Stephen writes in his preface: "I watched every episode of Blackadder, memorising quotes to swap in school the next day"!

I wasn't the only one who did this then!

Don't worry, Chris. I'm sure your thoughtful wife is just saving the Church Dogmatics to surprise you on your birthday. When you notice that she has quietly sold your car, bicycle, computer, television, furniture, and clothes, you'll know that she is just wisely saving up for this marvellous birthday present.... ;-)
