I wonder if any of you kind folk could help me with a reading list for the question "How should the apocalyptic language in the Olivet Discourse be understood?"
Joel Marcus' article, "The Sitz im Leben of Mark," provides helpful information on the historical background behind Mk 13 (useful provided you haven't taken Bauckham's thesis to a crazy extreme).
I'm sure I don't need to tell you about Tom Wright (!), but there are a pair of useful pieces on the referent of Mark 13:24-27: David Wenham's article in the Festscrift for Donald Guthrie, Christ the Lord and R T France's discussion in his Jesus and the Old Testament (appendix A) or either of his Matthew commentaries on the relevant passage. Wenham thinks there is an 'end of the world' reference, France thinks it's about the fall of Jerusalem.
Chris in `The Dictionary Of Jesus and the Gospels` ed. Joel Green etc the article on Apocalyptic Teaching by T.J. Gettert might be useful sorry if you have pointed your student have seen this already. I would recommend to your students the The Essential Reference Collection CD-Rom it might seem expensive but it has the IVP Dictionaries and more
I am New Testament Tutor for St Mellitus College and St Paul's Theological Centre, London. In my postgraduate research (under the supervision of Max Turner) I’m working on a thesis that concerns the christological significance of the language Paul used to describe the relationship between risen Lord and believer. My blog, Chrisendom, is primarily occupied with biblical and theological themes – especially those Apostle Paul shaped, but I try as best as I can to squeeze in a decent amount of inappropriate baloney on the way. For more about me, click here for my interview with biblioblogs' Jim West.
