I am New Testament Tutor for St Mellitus College and St Paul's Theological Centre, London. In my postgraduate research (under the supervision of Max Turner) I’m working on a thesis that concerns the christological significance of the language Paul used to describe the relationship between risen Lord and believer. Fantastic. Shame we can't hear T.F. Torrance's input.

What an ass...anine statement.

If you will look up "Creationism" in an American dictionary, you will find Polkinghorne is quite accurate! The term has been hi-jacked by fundamentalist Bible-literalists, and this is primarily a North American (one could argue that it is US excluding the more enlightened Canadians) phenomenon. Many of us (North American Christians who are also Evolutionists) are using the label "Evolutionary Creationists" in an effort to restore dignity to creationism.
I get it. It's a have your cake and eat it too...but, I get it. I actually got it when I read the article.
Sadly, your interpretation and desire of evolutionary belief, (because God is so wonderful to give us this incredible evolution to confound the scientists and of those who might believe this particular story can be taken literally) completely takes the scripture and ignores the timing of the ages, the laws of God, yet it gives us a perfect picture from that day of creation to the fulfillment of all that was written concerning God's "evolution" of man and the fulfillment of things to come.
I find it strange (especially with those who believe) how so many want science to be what guides us as a race (yes..you don't really believe that) and desires to question the fact that Luke takes the geneology back to Adam, Paul refers to the first man Adam,all die because of Adam and all live because of Christ. Paul makes a pretty good case by saying; "Sin came into the world through "one man" and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all have sinned - sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet, death reigned from "Adam" to Moses even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come." Rom 5:12-14
Please, no need to translate Adam for me.
That's right, and Jesus is obviously speaking literally when he says:
"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple."
No need to translate Jesus for me.
Wouldn't want to translate Jesus for you...but would think you would need to translate the word "hate" in the context of what Jesus was saying.

The visions of Joel, Daniel, Ezekiel, and St. John the Revelator must all be literal events too!
